Bead Heads and Hooks

We are all a little confused concerning which hook and size to use with a certain size bead. THe table at the end of this page will give you an idea.

First you must choose a hook with a round bend as the picture shows. On some models you might have to crimp down the barb for the bead to pass unobstructed. Dont worry about the barb being squished down. Barbs were invented to hold on to the bait ( worms and minows), not the fish, Really!!!


If your hook has a limerick bend like the picture, you wont be able to pass the bead. Only the round bend will permit the bead to pass easily

Beads are perforated one side larger than the other. This is so the bead will travel free at the bend. The barb of the hook goes in the smaller hole so that the bead sits snug on the eye.


So, choose you hooks properly before trying to tie those beadhead nymphs. Note that companies have different models of hooks and their styles might vary from the orther. The guide below is what it is, a guide and not the rule...
